A Lecture/Recital presented by our President, Tim Patient, in celebration of the centenary of the birth of the great French composer, Olivier Messiaen.

Saturday 25th October 2008

St. George’s Church, Colegate, Norwich.

We are honoured to have the noted recitalist and teacher Anne Page give a presentation about the Historic Organ Sound Archive project (HOSA) with particular reference to the English Classical organ. Using the 1801 George Pike England organ at St. George’s as a demonstration resource, Anne will also explore such intriguing and important topics as long compass keyboards, tuning temperaments, registration and performance practice, music editions, etc.

Desert Island Discs.

In the wake of her recital that so beautifully ornamented our AGM back in March, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Gillian Ward Russell as this year’s castaway. Ron Watson will once again be probing for the enthusiasms that lie behind the public face.

Saturday 1st March 2008

7.30p.m.

Thorpe St. Andrew Parish Church, Yarmouth Road, Norwich.

An evening with Andrew Hayden.

Mr. Hayden, the organist at St. Andrew’s, demonstrated the very fine 1901 Abbot and Smith organ and talked about its recent overhaul. After an opportunity for members to play the instrument, Mr. Hayden, gave an illustrated presentation on organ photography.

The Great Hospital, Bishopgate, Norwich.

Annual General Meeting.

This was held in the ‘Refectory’ and was followed by a buffet lunch.

After lunch Richard Bower gave a talk on the restoration of the organ that he had recently completed in the adjacent St. Helen’s Church. To conclude the event, Dr. Gillian Ward Russell gave a recital on the organ.

The Methodist Chapel, Brooke, Norfolk.

Martin Cottam examined the life, work, legacy and genius of the 19th Century French organ builder, Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.

Wednesday 28th May 2008

11a.m. onwards

Outing to the City of London.

We visited and played three superb and historic instruments in churches all within approximately ten minutes walking distance of Liverpool Street station:

St. Helen’s, Bishopsgate; The Dutch Church, Austin Friars, where our member Anne Page introduced the organ to us; St. Botolph’s, Aldgate.

11a.m. onwards

Outing to West Norfolk.

We met at Walpole St. Peter church. After lunch at the King of Hearts pub, West Walton we moved to St. Mary’s Church, West Walton.

The day ended with a visit to the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.

Saturday July 19th 2008

 

President’s Day.

This started at the Bure Valley Railway Station in Aylsham.

We travelled by train to Wroxham.

This was followed by a 90 minute cruise on the broads.

After lunch in Wroxham, we travelled back to Aylsham.

The final part of the day consisted of Evensong at St. Michael’s Church, Aylsham, sung by the Church choir and members of the association. This was followed by refreshments.

Saturday 6th September 2008

 

Princes Street URC Norwich.

NOA Young Organists’ Recital.

This year’s recital was given by Matthew Bond on the fine Willis organ at the URC where he is assistant to Peter Stevenson. He presented a varied programme, exploring the range of tone colours of the instrument and his excellent performance shows just what an accomplished player he is.
